Who is Jesus?
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. -Colossians 1:15
The historical Jesus was born in Roman controlled Judaea near the end of the reign of Caesar Augustus, but that isn’t where His story begins. He actually existed before anything had ever been created. He was with God in the beginning because He was God. God has eternally existed in three persons: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and these three are all perfectly united in one divine being. Jesus, as the Son, is the person by whom God created all things in heaven and on earth. Nothing could have existed without Jesus because God’s reason for creation depended on Him.
God created everything as a way of sharing Himself, and the most personal way that God could share Himself was by taking on the form of a man and living among us. Jesus isn’t half God and half man; He’s completely God and completely man, united in one person. As a man, Jesus has a body like ours, suffered like we do, and He was tempted in every way that we are, but never sinned.
If all Jesus did was come and live as a perfect human, then we would have had no benefit from Him, since our problem is our sin. Our sin keeps us from seeing or even wanting to see God. Christ, however, came to give us life by bearing our sin in His flesh and dying on the cross. He received the penalty of our sins even though He had never sinned. He satisfied the wrath of God’s holiness against our sin so that we can know God and dwell with Him forever.
Three days after Christ’s death, He rose again because His death conquered both sin and death. He now sits in Heaven praying for those who belong to Him. Just like a priest He stands before God on our behalf. Because He is completely God, He is completely righteous and has full access to the Father. Because He is completely man, He can fully sympathize with us.
Jesus promises that whoever puts their trust in His death and resurrection has received the gift of eternal life. Everyone who will die to themselves, He will make alive in Himself and reconcile them with God. He promises that one day He will come back and destroy sin once and for all and save His people from a world corrupted by sin. He will be their King in a new world free of sin and His redeemed will be in unity with him for eternity.
Jesus is the perfect sacrifice, the perfect priest, and the perfect king. He is the only way that we can know God. There is no other way for anyone to be saved except through Him and all those He promises to save, He will save completely.
