The announcement of God’s peace toward men impacts every area of our lives. Because of Jesus’s coming, we can have peace with God, peace with ourselves, and peace with fellow sinners.
In this portion of Luke 14, Jesus has been invited to the home of a ruling Pharisee for dinner. As He observes power-mongering and selfishness on display, He takes the opportunity to teach the people and the host about the priorities of God. As believers, we are to see our homes and our tables as instruments for displaying the love of God to needy people. As we are faithful to put God and then others before ourselves, we will realize amazing opportunities to share the gospel of Christ.
Christ speaks in a parable here in order to reveal more truth regarding the coming of His new covenant, and how that new covenant is far better than the covenant of works that came before. The new wine of the gospel can only be placed within the new covenant, it cannot simply be tacked onto the old covenant in one’s attempt to justify themselves by their works.
