Foolish Schemes and Manipulations
Some read this chapter and say “Joab is helping David and Absalom be reconciled. The chapter ends with a benevolent Father and a sinful son reunited. Isn't this just like the parable of the prodigal son?” NO IT IS NOT! That parable is a beautiful representation of a son's humble repentance and a father's loving forgiveness. Neither dynamic is found here. Here we have the circumspect return of an unrepentant murderer to Israel's center of power. It is a story full of foreboding.
