The Bridegroom and the Kingdom

In these verses, we once again have Jesus responding to the prevailing legalism of His day with divine wisdom. Because He is the bridegroom arrived to redeem His bride, the church, it would be inappropriate for his disciples to fast. In the parables of the clothing patch and the new wine in old wineskins, He is making reference to the new covenant He had come to establish, a covenant in continuity with God's moral law yet fulfilling all the ceremonial requirements.
